3 Day Rishikesh Itinerary

Rishikesh is not a place you would visit and check off your list. It is an experience to immerse yourself in. A visit here would leave you with memories laden with cultural, spiritual, and adrenaline-pumping experiences. Here is how I would plan a perfect 3-day Rishikesh itinerary for you to get you the best of everything in Rishikesh.

3 Day Rishikesh Itinerary: Day 1

The morning of the first day in Rishikesh can be spend covering Lakshman Jhula, Terah Manzil temple, and Beatles Ashram. After a hearty lunch in one of the must-visit restaurants of Rishikesh, you can head for Neer Garh Waterfalls on a fun hike through a forested glade. For the night, head to Shivpuri for a unique camping experience by the Ganges.

Lakshman Jhula

The first place to begin your Rishikesh trip is at Lakshman Jhula. Lakshman Jhula, along with Ram Jhula are two suspension bridges across the River Ganga in Rishikesh. Lakshman Jhula is steeped in Hindu mythologies.

Legend has it that Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana visited Rishikesh for meditation for penance after they murdered demon Ravana. Lakshman Jhula in Rishikesh is considered one of the spots where the lords crossed the Ganges using ropeways during their stay.

Terah Manzil Mandir

Located on the banks of the Ganges, the Terah Manzil Temple, also known as the Trimbakeshwar Temple, is a sacred pilgrimage site. This thirteen-story temple offers panoramic views of the river and the surrounding mountains.

Each floor of the temple is dedicated to a different deity, making it a unique and spiritually significant place for devotees. The climb to the top is rewarded with breathtaking vistas, making it a must-visit for both religious and nature enthusiasts.

Beatles Ashram

The Beatles Ashram gained international fame when the iconic band, The Beatles, visited Rishikesh in the 1960s to learn transcendental meditation. Nestled in the Rajaji National Park, this abandoned ashram provides a nostalgic journey into the past.

Wander through the graffiti-covered walls and explore the meditation caves where The Beatles once sought inspiration. The serene ambiance and historical significance make this a must-visit for fans of the legendary band and those seeking a tranquil retreat.

3 Day Rishikesh Itinerary: Day 2

Day 2 of your Rishikesh trip can be best used for some adventure and soaking up cultural intricacies woven into the Hindu religious expression. Start your day with river rafting on the Ganges from Shivpuri camping site.

The rafting route is 16 km long, with Ram Jhula being the finishing point. Ganga Beach is also by the finishing point. After exploring Ganga Beach and Ram Jhula, head to Triveni Ghat to witness and participate in Ganga Aarti.

River Rafting

Rishikesh is renowned as the adventure capital of India, and one of the most exhilarating experiences it offers is white-water river rafting on the sacred Ganges. The tumultuous rapids of the Ganges provide the perfect setting for both novice and experienced rafters.

As you navigate through the swirling waters and the stunning landscapes of the Ganges River, you’ll not only experience the thrill of a lifetime but also witness the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding Himalayan foothills.

Rishikesh has four starting points for rafting with varying levels of difficulty—Brahmapuri (Grade I), Shivpuri (Grade I, II), Marine Drive (Grade III, IV), and Kaudiyala (Grade IV). The Shivpuri route is the most popular among tourists and acts as a perfect combo to camping at Shivpuri.

This picturesque stretch along the Ganges River offers a perfect setting for relaxation and contemplation. You can unwind on the sandy shores, dip their toes in the refreshing waters, or simply bask in the warm glow of the sun.

Ganga Beach is not just a scenic spot; it’s a place where the rhythmic flow of the sacred river encourages moments of introspection and connection with nature. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful retreat or a spot to capture the perfect sunset over the Ganges, Ganga Beach is a must-visit destination in Rishikesh.

Ram Jhula

Connecting the eastern and western banks of the Ganges, Ram Jhula is an iconic suspension bridge that stands as a testament to both engineering marvel and spiritual significance. The bridge is adorned with vibrant temples, ashrams, and shops, creating a lively atmosphere.

Walking across Ram Jhula offers panoramic views of the river and the surrounding landscapes, making it a favorite among both pilgrims and tourists.

As you stroll along this suspended marvel, feel the gentle sway beneath your feet and immerse yourself in the spiritual energy that permeates the air. Don’t forget to explore the myriad shops and eateries that line the bridge, offering a delightful blend of spirituality and local culture.

Triveni Ghat

Triveni Ghat is another holy spot in Rishikesh that deserve a special mention due to a spectacular ritual you will get to witness here—The Ganga Arti. It is a point where the three holy rivers, Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati converge. This is considered a sacred point and it is believed that taking a dip in the water here will wash away all your sins.

Every evening around the sunset, the special ritual of Ganga Arti is performed at Triveni Ghat. Here river Ganga is worshipped as a Goddess and priests chant Vedic hymns and make circular gestures with holy lamps in their hands as prayers.

At the same time, devotees place their offerings of tiny clay lamps and sacred flowers on broad leaves and float them on the river. The floating lamps, setting sun, and the Vedic chants create a very calming and surreal experience. If you are interested, you can purchase the items from the nearby local market and perform this ritual too.

3 Day Rishikesh Itinerary: Day 3

As they say, save the best for the last! On your third and final day in Rishikesh, head to Jumping Height in Mohan Chatti, located 25 km from Ram Jhula, for some extreme adventure. After that thrill settles down, head to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, the most iconic temple in Rishikesh with mythological significance.

Jumping Heights

If you are an adventure junkie and a grade IV river rafting experience was not enough to quench your thirst, Rishikesh offers you the highest bungee jumping spot in India. Located about 25 km from Rishikesh town, Jumping Heights is a premium adventure sport company in India offering activities like bungee jumping and flying fox in Rishikesh and Goa. The bungee here is designed by experts from New Zealand over a cliff overlooking a tributary of the Ganges.

The jump is from a height of 83 meters and you will be secured from a harness to the bungee cord. You have to pay separate charges for the activity and videography. The cost of bungee jumping is Rs. 3700 and to get a video of it, you will need to pay an additional Rs. 900. They do not let you take your Go Pro or anything as it is against their policies.

Pro Tip: Book your activity in advance over their website to avoid any hassles. Bungee jumping is a time-consuming activity and there will be a lot of waiting if you have not already booked yourself a slot.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

Situated amidst the dense forests and rolling hills, the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Legend has it that this is the spot where Lord Shiva consumed the poison that emerged during the churning of the ocean, turning his throat blue (Neelkanth).

The temple architecture is awe-inspiring, and the spiritual aura surrounding the area makes it a significant pilgrimage site. The scenic drive to the temple is an added bonus, offering glimpses of the pristine landscapes surrounding Rishikesh.

3 Day Rishikesh Itinerary: Day 3 Alternative

If you are visiting Rishikesh between 15 November to 15 June, take a jungle safari at Rajaji National Park to encounter the wild in the wilderness. This can be an alternate plan for any of the 3 Days in your Rishikesh trip.
