Eravikulam National Park
Eravikulam National Park stands out as one of the top attractions in Munnar for family, mainly due to its role in conserving the endangered Nilgiri Tahr.
Stretching over 97 square kilometers in the Western Ghats, the park is characterized by its rugged mountains and rolling grasslands, interspersed with shola forests.
This unique ecosystem supports not only the Nilgiri Tahr but also several species of birds. Here we could enjoy the scenic beauty, observe the wildlife, and even got lucky enough to sight the Nilgiri Tahrs up close.
The park is open to visitors from 7 AM to 6 PM but remains closed during the breeding season of the Tahrs (February and March) to protect the wildlife.
The entry fee for Eravikulam National Park is Rs. 200 for Indian adults and Rs. 500 for foreign nationals. The entry fee for Indian child between 5-12 years is Rs. 150. Entry is free for Indian child under 5 years of age.
What we liked the most about the national park was its kid-friendly with its clean paved roads with strong fences on the side. On top of that, due to its well-planned layout, the park is also senior-citizen and disability friendly. You can take a battery car to explore the entire park and get a comfortable ride to the end point effortlessly. No wonder, Eravikulam National Park earned the top rank among all national parks in India.
Mattupetty Dam
Mattupetty Dam is a gravity dam constructed in the 1940. Situated at an altitude of 1700 meters, it is a vital source of electricity and water for the region. We were drawn to the dam due to its picturesque surroundings.
One of the main attractions at Mattupetty Dam that we enjoyed as a family is the boating facility provided at the reservoir. You can rent various types of boats, including speedboats and pedal boats, to explore the large reservoir.
We felt the calm waters combined with the surrounding scenic landscape offer us a tranquil boating experience.
Anamudi Peak View Point
Anamudi Peak, the highest peak in the Western Ghats and South India, towers at an elevation of 2,695 meters. Located within the confines of Eravikulam National Park, the peak is a prominent feature of the region, often referred to as the “Himalayas of the South.”
The viewpoint near the base of Anamudi offers spectacular vistas of surrounding sub-tropical forests, vast tea plantations, and undulating hills.
While the summit itself is restricted to protect its fragile ecosystem, the accessible areas provide ample opportunities for photography and trekking, offering a glimpse into the region’s natural beauty. We drove to the viewpoint to witness the spectacular sight. The hike to Anamudi Peak is kid-friendly.
Tea Gardens
Munnar’s tea gardens are perhaps the most defining feature of its landscape, casting a lush green blanket over the rolling hills. These expansive plantations date back to the late 19th century when they were developed during the British colonial period.
Walking through these verdant fields is not only a visual delight but also an immersive experience into the heart of Munnar’s tea culture. You can see tea pickers in action, delicately plucking the leaves by hand, a method that ensures the highest quality of tea.
The cool climate of Munnar provides the perfect conditions for tea cultivation, making it one of the leading tea producers in India.
The vast stretches of tea bushes on the undulating terrain are not just agricultural sites but also a sanctuary for various species of flora and fauna, enhancing Munnar’s biodiversity.
Tea Museum
The Tea Museum in Munnar is dedicated to preserving the storied history of tea cultivation in the region. Located at the Nallathanni Estate of Tata Tea, the museum is a treasure trove for tea lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
It houses photographs and machinery, each telling a story about the evolution and growth of tea production in Munnar. The exhibits include the original tea roller, dating back to 1905, the ‘Rotorvane,’ and a variety of other tea manufacturing equipment.
The museum also features a demonstration room for tea tasting where visitors can sample different varieties of tea.
One of the main attractions here is the ‘Pelton Wheel’ used in the early 20th century to generate power for the tea estates.
Attukal Waterfalls
Located between Munnar and Pallivasal, Attukal Waterfalls is a scenic spot well-known for its beautiful landscapes and the splendid waterfalls. The journey to the falls is as picturesque as the destination itself, with roads surrounded by thick forests and occasional views of the vast tea plantations.
During the monsoon, the waterfalls are particularly majestic, with increased volumes of water cascading down the rocks, creating a mesmerizing effect.
It’s a popular spot for picnics, photography, and simply enjoying the tranquility of nature away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Top Station
Top Station, located around 32 kilometers from Munnar on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, offers some of the most dramatic views of the Western Ghats and the valley below.
Historically, it was the uppermost railway station located in the Kundala Valley Railway that was built in the early 20th century for transporting tea and other goods.
Today, Top Station is popular for the Neelakurinji flowers, which bloom once every twelve years, blanketing the landscape in a vibrant blue. We drove up to Top Station on one of our family visits to Munnar, but sadly, it was not the neelakurinji season.
The site provides panoramic views that are particularly striking at dawn when the mist rolls over the mountains. The area’s high elevation results in cooler temperatures, making it a refreshing escape from the lower plains.
Echo Point, located about 15 kilometers from Munnar towards Top Station, is a unique attraction set alongside a tranquil lake and surrounded by lush hills covered in thick forests.
Echo Point
It is named so because of the natural echo phenomenon observed here. When you shout or clap, the sound waves travel across the lake and bounce back from the surrounding hills, creating a clear echo.
This distinct acoustic feature, coupled with breathtaking scenic views, makes Echo Point a family-friendly spot in Munnar. We had such fun at Echo Point on our family vacation. Here we screamed our names to the mountains to listen to the echo and then went on a boat ride. It was the perfect picnic destination for us.
Apart from that, Echo Point is lined with shops after shops of accessories, bags, and handicraft items. We spend quite some time shopping here as everything was cheap and yet of decent quality.
Kundala Lake
Kundala Lake is another serene spot located approximately 20 kilometers from Munnar on the way to Top Station. This artificial lake is nestled amidst rolling hills and lush forests, making it one of the most picturesque places in the region.
The lake is famous for its dam and boat rides that you can enjoy. Another unique attraction at Kundala Lake is the Neelakurinji flowers, which bloom around the area once every twelve years, carpeting the landscape in a stunning shade of blue.
The peaceful environment of Kundala Lake makes it an ideal location for picnics and leisurely strolls. The lake and its surroundings also provide great opportunities for photography, capturing the essence of Munnar’s enchanting natural beauty.
We visited Kundala Lake right after visiting Echo Point. As we did boating at Echo Point, we didn’t partake in boating here. We just took in the beautiful view, took a leisurely stroll by the lake and drove back to town.
Pothamedu View Point
Pothamedu View Point is one of Munnar’s most admired vantage points, situated about 6 kilometers from the town. It offers an expansive view of the valley and the surrounding hills draped in a tapestry of tea, coffee, and cardamom plantations.
The viewpoint is accessible by a winding road that passes through aromatic spice gardens and lush plantations, adding to the sensory experience of the visit.
The height at which Pothamedu View Point is located allows you to feel as if you are on the crest of the mountain range, providing a panoramic view that is perfect for photography, especially early in the morning when the clouds roll in.
Lakkam Waterfalls
Located in the heart of lush forests near the village of Vagavurai, on the way to Marayoor from Munnar, Lakkam Waterfalls is a captivating natural wonder.
Originating from the Eravikulam Plateau, the waters of the Lakkam River cascade down a cliff, creating the spectacular Lakkam Waterfalls.
The falls are surrounded by dense vegetation, adding to the charm and mystery of the location. You can get close to the waterfall via a short, scenic walk through the woods, which adds an element of adventure to the visit.
Wonder Valley Adventure Park
Wonder Valley Adventure Park in Anachal, Munnar, is an exciting destination for families and adventure enthusiasts. This park combines natural scenery with a range of fun and thrilling activities.
From zip-lining and rock climbing to archery and a number of water-based activities, the park offers something for everyone. We spent half a day at Wonder Valley Adventure Park on one of our Munnar trips and it was totally worth it.
We covered a lot of ride and even got to watch the 12D movie (you never get time to watch it!). What we liked the most was that there were quite some rides for our four-year-old as well, making it a fun time for the entire family.
Wonder Valley takes advantage of its beautiful forest setting, allowing you to enjoy both the thrill of adventure sports and the tranquility of nature.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is a unique protected area located in the rain shadow region on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats, near Munnar. Unlike the lush green landscapes typically associated with Munnar, Chinnar boasts a distinct dry thorn scrub forest due to its lower rainfall.
This ecosystem supports a diverse array of flora and fauna, some of which are highly adapted to the arid environment. The sanctuary is home to numerous species including the endangered grizzled giant squirrel, elephants, gaurs, leopards, and the elusive Indian star tortoise.
Chinnar is also renowned for its rich avian life, making it a paradise for bird watchers. One of the main attractions within the sanctuary is the Thoovanam Waterfalls, which provides a spectacular backdrop for wildlife watching and photography.
Chinnakanal Waterfalls
Also known as Power House Waterfalls, Chinnakanal Waterfalls is located near Chinnakanal village, a short distance from Munnar. The waterfall descends from a steep rock at an altitude of about 2000 meters and is part of the Devikulam River.
The route to Chinnakanal Waterfalls is as scenic as the destination itself, with several spots along the way that offer stunning views of the deep valleys and tea plantations typical of the region. The accessibility of the waterfall makes it a popular spot for families and casual visitors who are looking for a peaceful spot to unwind amidst nature.

Marayoor
Marayoor is a unique and fascinating destination located about 40 kilometers from Munnar. Known for its natural sandalwood forests, ancient dolmens, and lush sugarcane fields, Marayoor offers a markedly different experience from the usual tea-covered hills of Munnar.
The region is celebrated for its indigenous variety of sugarcane, with local jaggery considered among the best due to its distinctive sweetness.
Archaeologically significant, Marayoor boasts several dolmens and rock paintings that date back to the Stone Age, providing a glimpse into ancient human settlements in the area. The sandalwood forest in Marayoor is one of the few naturally occurring sandalwood forests in India.
The combination of cultural heritage, archeological significance, and natural beauty makes Marayoor a compelling visit for those looking to explore the offbeat paths in Kerala.
Kolukkumalai Tea Estate
Perched at an altitude of about 8,000 feet above sea level, the Kolukkumalai Tea Estate holds the title for the highest tea plantation in the world. This estate is renowned not only for its breathtaking altitude but also for its traditional methods of tea processing dating back to the colonial era.
The journey to Kolukkumalai is an adventure in itself, involving a rugged, steep drive that is best managed in a jeep drive. The reward at the summit is a panoramic view of the rolling tea gardens against the backdrop of distant mountain ranges, often cloaked in a gentle mist.
Lockhart Gap
Lockhart Gap is another mesmerizing spot near Munnar, about 13 kilometers from the town center. It is named after the heart-shaped gap formed between two mountains visible from the viewpoint.
The place offers stunning vistas of the verdant valleys and tea plantations stretching as far as the eye can see. The fresh mountain air and the scenic beauty make Lockhart Gap an ideal spot for nature lovers and photographers. We stopped here to take photos on our trip.
Rose Garden
Munnar’s Rose Garden is a delightful attraction nestled in the verdant hills, showcasing an impressive collection of rare and exotic flowers, herbs, and shrubs.
Located a few kilometers away from Munnar town, this garden is more than just roses; it includes an array of ornamental flowers and herbal plants. The garden is meticulously maintained and offers a kaleidoscope of colors and fragrances that enchant visitors.
When we visited Munnar Rose Garden, it was not in its best shape. The rose plants hardly had any flowers. The dahlias and anthuriums were in full bloom. We found some good spots for photography and took advantage of it.
CSI Christ Church
CSI Christ Church in Munnar holds a significant place in the town’s colonial history. Built in 1910 by the British, this church is an exemplar of neo-Gothic architecture, and it stands as a reminder of Munnar’s past under British plantation rule.
The church is constructed with rough-hewn granite stones, which lend it a robust yet elegant appearance. The stained-glass windows are one of its most striking features, illustrating biblical scenes in vibrant colors and intricate designs.
These windows not only enhance the spiritual ambiance inside but also attract art enthusiasts for their craftsmanship. CSI Christ Church also serves as a poignant memorial to the planters who developed the region’s tea gardens. The church is surrounded by a well-maintained garden and is often enveloped in mist, giving it a serene and almost ethereal feel.
Nyayamakad Waterfalls
Located between Munnar and Rajamalai, Nyayamakad Waterfalls is a breathtaking sight, particularly during the monsoon when the water cascades down a rocky slope from a height of about 1,600 meters.
This waterfall is set amidst dense greenery, offering spectacular views and a serene environment for visitors. The area around Nyayamakad Waterfalls is a popular spot for picnics and trekking, offering trails that beginner and seasoned trekkers alike find appealing.
The cool mist and the soothing sound of the falling water provide a refreshing escape from the tropical heat. The waterfall is easily accessible by a short walk from the main road, making it a convenient stop for tourists exploring the area.
Blossom Park
Blossom Park, also known as Blossom International Park, is located just a few kilometers from Munnar town and is an ideal spot for families and nature lovers to relax and enjoy outdoor activities.
Spread over 16 acres, this beautifully landscaped park is full of colorful flowers, lush lawns, and artificial water bodies, creating a picturesque setting.
We found Blossom Park to be a perfect place for picnics with young children. There are several rides they can enjoy. Our son had a great time in the park while we were spending quite time by the park benches. I was told that there used to be boating in the lake surrounding the park. However, we didn’t find boating service when we visited. I feel it would have made Blossom Park more fun for adults.
Meenuliyan Para
Meenuliyan Para is a lesser-known yet strikingly beautiful destination near Munnar, cherished for its unique landscape and adventurous trekking opportunities. It features a massive rock that rises 4000 feet above sea level and provides panoramic views of the surrounding forests and plantations.
The top of Meenuliyan Para is covered with dense forest, and it’s known for having a large rock with a surface smooth enough that one can walk on it. The trek to Meenuliyan Para is somewhat challenging, which makes it all the more rewarding for avid trekkers and nature enthusiasts.
Once at the summit, you are greeted with breathtaking views of the Western Ghats and the underlying valleys, making it a perfect spot for photography and nature observation
Anayirangal Dam
Anayirangal Dam, situated about 22 kilometers away from Munnar, is surrounded by lush tea gardens and thick forests that enhance its scenic beauty.
The name ‘Anayirangal’ translates to ‘where elephants come down,’ reflecting the area’s frequent visits by wild elephants which come to drink from the reservoir. The dam and its serene reservoir offer you a tranquil escape to enjoy nature’s quietude.
Boating facilities are available at the dam, providing you with a unique vantage point to observe the charming landscape and the wildlife. Anayirangal Dam is a delightful spot for wildlife photographers and anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the peacefulness of the natural world.
Cheeyappara Waterfalls
The Cheeyappara Waterfalls is one of the most celebrated waterfalls in the Munnar region, located on the Kochi – Madurai Highway.
This seven-tiered waterfall is a magnificent sight, particularly in the monsoon when it flows with full force, making it a popular stop for travelers. The falls cascade down in a spectacular display of nature’s power and beauty, inviting visitors to take a break and enjoy the refreshing mist.
The area around Cheeyappara is rich with lush greenery, making it a popular spot for picnics and short hikes. The accessibility of the waterfall right from the main road adds to its appeal, allowing even those not keen on trekking to enjoy the stunning view and the cool spray of the water.
Carmelagiri Elephant Park
Carmelagiri Elephant Park offers visitors in Munnar a unique opportunity to interact closely with elephants. Located a short drive from the town, this park allows you to ride, bathe, and feed the elephants, providing a memorable experience especially for families with children.
The elephant rides take you through the natural forest around the park, giving you a chance to observe these magnificent creatures in a more natural setting than a typical zoo.
The interaction with elephants is managed with a focus on the safety and well-being of both the animals and visitors, making it a responsible choice for wildlife experiences. This park is a great way to learn about elephants, their behavior, and the efforts made to conserve them in Kerala.
