How to Reach Betaab Valley

Betaab Valley is the “B” in the “ABC” of Pahalgam, which are Aru Valley, Betaab Valley, and Chandanwadi. Check out my Pahalgam Travel Guide to know what to explore in Pahalgam and how to avoid getting scammed.  Betaab Valley is located on the foothills of the way to Chandanwadi.

Betaab valley is about 100 km from Srinagar and 7.5 km from Pahalgam taxi stand. If traveling in own vehicle, you can drive all the way to Betaab Valley from Srinagar. However, if you hired a taxi in Srinagar, you will need to reach Pahalgam in the Srinagar registered taxi and then hire a Pahalgam-based taxi from the local taxi stand.

Note: Srinagar-based taxis are not allowed to Betaab Valley. You have to hire a local taxi here. This is not out of any safety concerns but to give the locals an opportunity to earn their living as tourism is their main source of income.

How Betaab Valley Got its Name

“Betaab Valley” is rather a strange name for a beautiful park. Here is the fascinating story of how Hagan Valley came to be rechristened as “Betaab Valley” about four decades ago.

In 1983, Hagan Valley became the shooting location of the song “Jab Hum Jawan Honge” from the movie Betaab, starring Sunny Deol and Amritha Singh. This movie, scripted by Javed Akthar went on to become a cult movie of the time and the song, set to music by R.D. Burman and sung by Lata Mangeshkar won several Filmfare Awards.

The popularity of the movie and its impact on tourism to Hagan Valley as a result was such that, the valley since then, came to be known as Betaab Valley. In more recent times, the 2022 blockbuster Rockstar was also shot here, however, the park is unlikely to see any change to its name any time soon.
