Walking through the Kuthiramalika Palace Museum was like stepping back in time—we marveled at the royal artifacts and the elegance of traditional Kerala architecture.
TBut it’s not just the history that captivated me; Trivandrum’s natural beauty is another compelling reason to visit. We loved lounging on the golden sands of Kovalam Beach and soaking in the serene sunsets at Shangumugham Beach. The tranquil surroundings of Aruvikkara Dam and the breathtaking vistas from Ponmudi Hill Station offered perfect escapes into nature, making our visit both rejuvenating and exhilarating.
For someone like my husband who appreciates art and science, Trivandrum didn’t disappoint. We spent hours admiring the magnificent works of art at the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery and the Sree Chitra Art Gallery. The Priyadarshini Planetarium and the Natural History Museum were also fascinating—they blend education with entertainment, making learning about the cosmos and natural sciences a fun experience for our 5 year old kid.
And then there were the unique attractions like Magic Planet and Psychopark, which added a fun and educational twist to our family trip. These places, dedicated to magic and psychology respectively, provided interactive and engaging experiences that we thoroughly enjoyed as a family.

Thiruvananthapuram Zoo
Embark on an exciting adventure at the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, one of the oldest and best zoos in India, set amidst lush greenery and scenic landscapes.
As I strolled through the well-maintained pathways, I encountered a diverse array of animals, from majestic tigers and lions to playful primates and colorful birds.
The zoo is part of a larger botanical garden and museum complex, providing a perfect setting for a day out in Trivandrum with family.
Unlike most zoos where animals are put in cages. the enclosures here are designed to resemble the natural habitats of the animals.
My four-year-old son had the time of his life in Trivandrum Zoo seeing the wildlife up and close.
Shangumugham Beach
For a serene and picturesque beach experience, head to Shanghumukham Beach, a popular destination for both locals and tourists in Thiruvananthapuram.
Known for its stunning sunsets, this beach offers a peaceful retreat where you can relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Arabian Sea. We had the most wonderful time in the evening, watching the sun set and munching on snacks rom the beachside shacks.
As we walked along the sandy shore, we came across the impressive statue of a mermaid, known as ‘Sagarakanyaka,’ created by the renowned sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman. This massive sculpture adds a unique charm to the beach.
The beach is also a great spot for watching fishermen bring in their daily catch, providing a glimpse into the local way of life. With its long stretches of sand and calming waves, Shanghumukham Beach is an ideal place to unwind and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.

Veli Tourist Village
Veli Tourist Village is one of my favorite kids-friendly spots in Trivandrum, where the backwaters meet the sea in a truly magical setting. Just a short drive from Thiruvananthapuram, this picturesque destination is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts like myself. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by the tranquil lagoons, lush gardens, and the gentle waves of the Arabian Sea—it felt like stepping into a postcard.
There’s so much to do here! I enjoyed a peaceful boat ride on Veli Lake, which gave me a chance to soak in the stunning landscape and spot some diverse birdlife.
We had the best time riding on the toy train as a family. My son also enjoyed playing in the park. You will find some sculptures of Kanayi Kunhiraman here as well.
Ponmudi Hill Station

As you walk through the gallery, you will be captivated by the vivid portrayal of Indian mythology, royal portraits, and scenes from classical literature, all rendered with exquisite detail and vibrant colors.

Sunil’s Wax Museum
For a fun and fascinating experience, head to Sunil’s Wax Museum located very close to Kuthiramalika and the West Nada of Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
This unique attraction is Kerala’s first wax museum, featuring lifelike wax figures of famous personalities from India and around the world. This was a surprise find on our trip and we enjoyed it thoroughly.
From Mahatma Gandhi and Sachin Tendulkar to several film celebrity, the museum showcases a diverse range of characters that appeal to all ages.
Each figure is meticulously crafted by Sunil Kandalloor, a wax sculptor, capturing the essence and personality of the individuals they represent.
It’s a great spot for family outings and a memorable experience for tourists. We posed with all our favorite celebrities. The museum staff were very cooperative and clicked us photos with the wax statues.
Madre De Deus Church (Vettucaud Church)
A top attraction in Trivandrum and a prominent pilgrim center, Madre De Deus Church, commonly known as Vettucaud Church, should be a must on your Trivandrum bucket list.
This beautiful Roman Catholic church, dedicated to Our Lady of Good Voyage, is a prominent pilgrimage site and an architectural marvel.
As you approach the church, you will be struck by its impressive facade, featuring Gothic-style arches and intricate stained-glass windows. Inside, the serene ambiance, ornate altar, and detailed artwork create a sacred space that invites reflection and devotion.
I have been to several churches in Kerala, but in my opinion, this is hands down the most beautiful church, both inside and outside.
Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple
Located in the bustling heart of Thiruvananthapuram, the Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple is a revered spiritual landmark dedicated to Lord Ganesha. As you enter the temple, you will be greeted by the sight of the deity in a unique seated posture, known as ‘Maha Ganapathi.’
The temple is particularly famous for its practice of offering coconuts to Lord Ganesha, which you can witness as devotees break coconuts in front of the temple as part of their ritual.
Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple is a revered religious site in Trivandrum. The local lore is that a true prayer at this temple brings you good fortune and prosperity.
Azhimala Shiva Temple
Located between Kovalam and Poovar Lake, the Azhimala Shiva Temple is a must-visit temple in Trivandrum for its spiritual ambiance, and breathtaking coastal views.
As we approach this serene temple, we were captivated by the sight of the majestic 58-feet tall Shiva statue in the Gangadhareshwara posture, which stands as a magnificent guardian against the backdrop of the vast ocean.
The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is renowned for its peaceful atmosphere and the stunning natural beauty that surrounds it. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks below adds a meditative quality to your visit. Inside the temple, the sanctum sanctorum houses a Shiva lingam, where devotees gather to offer prayers and seek blessings.
Interesting Fact: The Gangadhareshwara sculpture was built by a local artist, P. S. Devadathan. It is the tallest Shiva sculpture in Kerala.
CSI Christ Church
Step into the historic CSI Christ Church in Thiruvananthapuram, and you will be transported back to the colonial era. This charming church, established in the 19th century, is a testament to the city’s rich Christian heritage.
As we approached the church, we were struck by its elegant Gothic architecture, featuring tall spires, arched windows, and a quaint bell tower. Inside, the church exudes a serene and reverent atmosphere, with its beautifully crafted wooden pews, stained glass windows, and the intricate altar.
The church grounds are equally picturesque, offering a peaceful retreat in the midst of the city’s hustle and bustle.
Rock Cut Cave Shiva Temple
Venture into the ancient world with a visit to the Rock Cut Cave Shiva Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. This unique temple, carved directly into a rocky hillside, offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s historical and architectural heritage.
As you descend into the cool, dimly lit cave, you will find the sacred Shiva lingam, meticulously carved from the rock itself. The temple’s simplicity and rustic charm are a stark contrast to the grandiose temples you might be used to, yet it exudes a powerful sense of spirituality and reverence.

Located a little further from Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary and on the Kerala-Tamilnadu border, this majestic mountain is renowned for its biodiversity and serene landscapes.
As you embark on the trek to the summit, you will traverse through dense forests, cross bubbling streams, and encounter a myriad of flora and fauna unique to this region. The trek is challenging, but the rewards are immense; the panoramic views from the top, the cool mountain air, and the sense of accomplishment make it all worthwhile.
Agasthyarkoodam is also a significant spiritual site, believed to be the abode of Sage Agasthya, adding a mystical dimension to your journey.
Attukal Bhagavathy Temple
When you visit Thiruvananthapuram, don’t miss the chance to experience the divine energy at Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, also known as the “Sabarimala of Women.”
This revered temple, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy, is renowned for its grand Attukal Pongala festival, where millions of women gather annually to cook offerings and seek blessings.
The deity, Attukal Amma, is worshipped with deep devotion, and the temple’s serene ambiance offers a perfect place for reflection and prayer.
Interesting Fact: The festival got recognized by the Guinness World Records for its massive participation, showcases the profound faith and cultural richness of the region.
Kuthiramalika Palace Museum
Step into the regal past of Kerala with a visit to the Kuthiramalika Palace Museum, also known as Puthenmalika Palace.
This exquisite palace, built by the poet-king Swathi Thirunal in 1848, is a marvel of traditional Kerala architecture, featuring intricately carved wooden ceilings, elegant verandas, and stunning floral motifs. This humongous palace has 80 rooms of which 20 are open to public as part of the museum.
We enjoyed the guided tour at Kuthiramalika Palace Museum where we discovered a rich collection of artifacts, including royal portraits, antique furniture, and musical instruments, each telling a story of the opulent lifestyle of the Travancore royal family.
The palace is named after the 122 wooden horses that adorn its roof, adding a unique charm to its architectural splendor. The palace offers you very comprehensive guided tour at no additional charges.
Apart from the palace museum, there is also an art gallery in the compound with photographs and paintings related to the royal family of Travancore.
Priyadarshini Planetarium
Embark on a journey through the cosmos at the Priyadarshini Planetarium, one of the most advanced planetariums in India. Located in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram, this planetarium offers a fascinating experience for both children and adults.
As we settled into the comfortable seats of the dome-shaped theater, we were transported to distant galaxies to explore the wonders of the universe through state-of-the-art projections and engaging shows.
The planetarium’s programs cover a wide range of topics, from the solar system and black holes to the latest discoveries in space science, making complex astronomical concepts accessible and exciting.
The interactive exhibits and educational displays further enhance your visit, providing a comprehensive understanding of our universe. My son, although, was only four years when we visited, had lots of fun with the interactive exhibits.
While there may be more sophisticated and advanced planetariums in India than this, the fact that Trivandrum has the largest space center in India and also the oldest rocket launch station in India, makes this planetarium very special.
Natural History Museum
For a captivating exploration of the natural world, visit the Natural History Museum in Thiruvananthapuram. Located in the Trivandrum Zoo complex, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse flora and fauna of Kerala and beyond.
As you walk through the museum, you’ll encounter meticulously curated exhibits featuring taxidermized animals, geological specimens, and detailed dioramas that depict various ecosystems and wildlife habitats.
