12 Best Things to Do at Varkala Cliff Beach

Varkala Cliff Beach is one of the most happening beach destinations in Kerala, maybe even in India.  With its dramatic cliffs, pristine beach, and vibrant Bohemian vibe, the cliff beach is packed with experience to explore.

Having visited the beach a couple of times, I would like to share some of the best things to do in Varkala Cliff Beach for you to plan an amazing vacation in Varkala.

What is So Special About Varkala Cliff?

Before I made my first ever trip to Varkala Beach, I used to wonder, what is so special about Varkala Cliff? How Varkala Beach suddenly shot to fame to become one of the most visited beached in Kerala? Here’s what I found out!

If you have been to several beaches, you would know that the land around the beach is generally flat with some rocky structures. This beach is one of the few beaches in the country with cliffs by the sea. The cliff at Varkala Cliff Beach is about 20 metres (80 feet) high and spread across 6.4 kilometers of area.

The Geological Survey of India identifies the cliff formation at Varkala as a unique formation (now known as ‘Varkala Formation’) and declared it to be a national geological monument in 2014 and then as a geo-heritage site in 2015.

Following this, the landscape of the place underwent a significant face-lift with resorts, restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops adorning the cliff with every possible attraction you would be looking for in a beach vacation.

Taka a Dip to Wash Away Your Sins at Papanasham Beach

Varkala Beach is not just a tourist site, but also of great religious significance in the Hindu tradition. The beach has an alternate name, ‘Papanasam Beach’ which translates to “destroyer of sins.” The local lore is that that taking a dip in the waters here can wash away your sins.

This belief draws numerous pilgrims and spiritual seekers to the beach, especially during auspicious times and festivals.

The beach itself is stunning, with golden sands, clear waters, and a backdrop of towering cliffs. Taking a dip in the ocean here is a refreshing experience.

Whether you believe in the religious significance of the beach or not, wouldn’t it be awesome if while having fun at the beach, you could also wash away your sins!

Dine at Cliffside Restaurants

Dining at the cliffside restaurants in Varkala is one of my favorite experiences, where culinary delights meet breathtaking natural beauty. These restaurants are perfectly perched along the edge of Varkala Cliff, giving you panoramic views of the Arabian Sea as you dine.

Whether I’m enjoying a leisurely breakfast, a relaxed lunch, or a romantic dinner, the sight and sound of waves crashing against the rocks below make each meal special. The variety of eateries caters to every taste, from traditional Kerala cuisine bursting with rich spices and flavors to fresh seafood that’s a must-try in this coastal paradise.

Many of the restaurants also offer international dishes, ensuring there’s something for everyone. I love the idea of savoring a freshly grilled catch of the day while the sun sets, painting the sky in stunning shades of orange and pink. The atmosphere is always casual and welcoming, making it a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the local hospitality.

The cliff path is lined with small shops and stalls, each brimming with local handicrafts, jewelry, clothing, and artwork. As you stroll along the cliff, you can find beautifully crafted items made from natural materials such as coconut shells, seashells, and bamboo, reflecting the local artisanship.

Colorful textiles, including organic fabrics, make for wonderful keepsakes or gifts. Jewelry lovers will be thrilled with the variety of handmade pieces, featuring semi-precious stones and intricate designs.

Additionally, you can pick up aromatic spices and essential oils, which are not only great souvenirs but also a reminder of Kerala’s rich culinary and wellness traditions.

Ashley’s Tip: Bargaining is common practice here, and engaging in friendly negotiations with shopkeepers can be a fun part of the shopping experience. Just pop your eyes as if in shock at the outrageous price they quote and then engage in an elaborate negotiation exchange to bring it down to at least one-third of the quoted price.
