Take a Stroll
One of my favorite things to do at Kochi Marine Drive is simply taking a leisurely stroll along the waterfront. As I walk along the pathway, I can feel the gentle breeze from Vembanad Lake, which is especially refreshing in the early morning or late afternoon. The walkway is lined with benches where I like to pause, take in the view, and watch the boats glide by. There’s something incredibly calming about being surrounded by the water, the city’s skyline on one side, and the open expanse of the lake on the other.

Boat Rides
Another of my favorite activity to do at Marine Drive is to hop on one of the many boat rides available at the jetty. These boats take you on a ride around the backwaters showing landmarks. You don’t need to take any effort to find which one goes where or does what. The guides from the boat are very enthusiastic to get you to board their boats and try to lure you on the promenade with what they offer. Some of the landmarks you spot on these boat rides are the Bolgatty Palace Island, Wellington Island, and Fort Kochi.
We take these boat rides every time someone comes to visit us and we take them on a tour of Marine Drive. Another boating option you get at Marine Drive is the “slow” speed boat ride here. These are small, open, speed boats that go slower than your average speed boat and take you on a ride on the backwaters.

Sunset Cruise
If there’s one experience at Marine Drive that I always look forward to, it’s the sunset cruise. Sunset cruise at Marine Drive is a fun 2-3 hours on large vessels with music, dance, DJ, and food. My favorite part is when the vessel sway gently of the backwaters as the sun moves slowly closer to the horizon.
The atmosphere is magical as the sky transforms into a canvas of orange, pink, and purple hues, reflecting beautifully on the water. Being out on the backwater during this time feels almost surreal. The city lights begin to twinkle in the distance, and there’s a serene calm that takes over.
We have taken the Sagararani cruise which is offered by the government of Kerala. I have spotted bigger and fancier vessels at Marine Drive with sunset cruise in the recent times. I am sure these are great fun too.

Relax at the Rainbow Bridge
No visit to Marine Drive is complete without spending some time at the Rainbow Bridge. This iconic structure is not just a landmark; it’s a place where I go truly relax and take in the surroundings. I get on the bridge to watch people pass by, and taking in the expansive views of the backwaters. As the day comes to an end, the bridge gets illuminated by multi-coloured lights creating a beautiful spectacle. I love how the entire area takes on a different vibe, with the lights reflecting on the water and creating a mesmerizing scene.

Watch the Fishermen Handle the Chinese Fishing Nets
One of the most fascinating experiences at Kochi Marine Drive is watching the fishermen operate the traditional Chinese fishing nets. These massive, cantilevered structures are a signature sight in Kochi, and I’m always captivated by the rhythm and skill with which the fishermen work.

I often find myself standing by the edge of the promenade, watching as they lower the nets into the water and then pull them up, hoping for a good catch. It’s a glimpse into a way of life that’s been passed down through generations, and there’s something almost meditative about watching the nets dip into the water and rise again.

Enjoy a Milkshake by the Backwaters
Whenever I’m at Marine Drive, I can’t resist the simple pleasure of enjoying a milkshake by the backwaters. While there are many cafes and food stalls on the Promenade, opposite to the bank, there is this one milkshake shop under the Rainbow Bridge and right on the edge of the backwaters.
I love sitting here with my family, overlooking the backwaters and watching the boats come and go. It’s one of those small joys that make Marine Drive such a special place for me.

Visit the Subhash Chandra Bose Park
Just a short walk from Marine Drive, Subhash Chandra Bose Park is a lovely green space that I often visit. The park is a peaceful oasis, with well-maintained lawns, shaded pathways, and plenty of benches where I can sit and relax. My preschooler son loves the rides in the park. It is a great plae to unwind with family.
Experience the Nightlife
As the sun sets, Kochi Marine Drive transforms into a lively hub of activity, and experiencing the nightlife here is always a highlight of my visit. The area comes alive with vibrant street lights, bustling food stalls, and people out enjoying the cool evening air. I love wandering along the promenade, sampling local street food, and soaking in the lively atmosphere.
There’s often music in the air, with performers and buskers adding to the festive vibe. The illuminated buildings and reflections on the water create a stunning backdrop for an evening out.
Enjoy a Glass of Kuluki Sherbat
One of the must have experience at Marine Drive is to enjoy a glass of Kuluki Sherbat. Kuluki Sherbat is a local refreshing drink with tangy flavors like lime, green mango, and chilly, to name a few. “Kuluki” in Malayalam means “shaken.” The drink is made by mixing flavors and artistically shaking and flipping the drink. If you are ordering the drink, make sure you have your phone ready for capturing a video of the making of kuluki sherbat. Every time I visit Marine Drive, I go to the food stalls by the Abdul Kalam pillar and try a different flavor of kuluki sherbat.

Take a Ride on Kochi Water Metro
If you want to ride on a boat at Marine Drive but find the boats and sunset cruise expensive, go for the Kochi Water Metro. The water metro stop at the end of Marine Drive is called “High Court.” At just Rs. 30 you can ride in the air-conditioned boat to other nearby water metro stations.

Mangalvanam Bird Sanctuary
Just a short distance from Marine Drive lies the Mangalvanam Bird Sanctuary, a hidden gem that I absolutely love visiting. This lush, green sanctuary is a peaceful haven for both nature lovers and birdwatchers like me. As I walk through the sanctuary’s trails, I’m surrounded by the sounds of chirping birds and the rustling of leaves, making it a truly serene escape from the city’s bustle.

The sanctuary is home to a variety of bird species, and I often find myself spending hours here, binoculars in hand, spotting everything from kingfishers to herons. The mangrove forest adds to the charm, creating a unique ecosystem that’s fascinating to explore.

I have to warn you though, half of Kochi’s mosquito population live in Mangalvanam Bird Sanctuary! Use a very strong mosquito repellent all over your exposed skin to keep them at bay.
