We were captivated by the vast and varied collection, from dazzling Swarovski crystals to intricate Tanjore paintings. This unique museum, established in memory of the renowned industrialist and philanthropist Revi Karunakaran, offers an unparalleled glimpse into a diverse and exquisite collection of artifacts.

Entry Fee and Visiting Time

The entry fee for Revi Karunakaran Memorial Museum is Rs. 200 per person. The museum is open to visitors from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Photography is prohibited inside the museum, but there are many sculptures outside that you can snap. You are not allowed to park inside the property, so you will have to park your vehicle outside, by the main road.

We found the museum to be well-maintained with ample description and labelling for each item. There are employees/caretakers in each hall in the two-storied Museum, however there is no guided tour offered in the museum. We felt a guided tour would have been really helpful. and given the high ticket price, you would expect it.

The most prized possessions in the museum that we spotted include the vintage 1947-model Buick car that Karunakaran owned, a 24-carat gold plated Chinese tea set, and a lily-shaped crystal teapoy.

My Review of Revi Karunakaran Memorial Museum

I recently visited the Revi Karunakaran Memorial Museum in Alappuzha with my family, including my husband and our toddler son. Our visit was a remarkable experience, showcasing a collection like none I have seen before. The museum houses an extensive array of crystals, porcelain, and ivory artifacts, all displayed in a spectacular fashion.

Most museums in India primarily exhibit antiques from the Indian subcontinent, but this museum stands out with its vast collection of items from across the globe. The diversity and richness of the exhibits are truly impressive.

One downside we felt, however, is the museum’s no-photography policy. It would have been wonderful to capture some of the stunning displays to share with friends and family.

Another interesting aspect is learning about Revi Karunakaran himself. While he is not a “historical figure,” the plaques and photographs provide a fascinating glimpse into his life as a businessman and his family’s legacy.

Overall, we had a great experience, and I highly recommend visiting this museum. However, I would advise against bringing very young children.

Many artifacts are not housed behind glass encasement, and with their high value and fragility, you might find yourself constantly worried about your child touching or damaging something. We were terrified exploring the museum with our little boy! Proper encasement of the exhibits would ensure you can fully appreciate the beauty and history around you without any added stress.
