Entry Fee and Visiting Time

The entry fee at Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary for an Indian adult is Rs. 100 while for a child between 5-12 years is Rs. 50. For a foreign national tourist, it is Rs. 250. There are no additional charges for photography. However, there is a parking fee of Rs. 30 for four-wheelers and Rs. 20 for two-wheelers.

You can visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm. Early morning will be the best time to spot birds.

We found clean washrooms by the ticket counter. I don’t remember seeing any washroom inside the bird sanctuary.

The best budget seafood restaurant near Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is the kudumbasree-run restaurant, Samridhi Hotel Kumarakom. We had our lunch here and it was good.

The sanctuary is home to several resident bird species such as the Indian darter, little cormorant, heron, egret, waterfowl, owl, and kingfisher. These birds can be seen year-round, adding a continuous charm to the sanctuary’s vibrant ecosystem.

Besides birds, the sanctuary’s wetlands and forested areas are inhabited by small mammals like the Indian hare, monitor lizard, and mongoose. We spotted a monitor lizard on one of our visits. The waters of Vembanad Lake teem with fish, providing ample food for the bird population and contributing to the overall biodiversity of the area. You can actually them in the water with your naked eyes.

From June to August, the monsoon season transforms the sanctuary into a lush, green haven. While the rains might limit some activities, the resident bird population is vibrant and the landscape is breathtaking.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is well-connected and accessible through various modes of transportation.

By Air, the nearest airport is Cochin International Airport, located about 85 kilometers away. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Kumarakom.

By Train, the closest railway station is Kottayam, which is approximately 16 kilometers from the sanctuary.

Kottayam is well-linked to major cities across India, making it convenient for travelers. By Road, Kumarakom is connected to major towns and cities in Kerala by a network of well-maintained roads.

Regular bus services are available from Kottayam and other nearby cities. For a more comfortable journey, private taxis and car rentals can also be arranged.
