When I think of the best things to do in Kovalam with family, Kovalam Beach immediately comes to mind. Often called the “Paradise of the South,” this beach is the heart of Kovalam’s charm. It’s actually a series of three crescent-shaped beaches, with Lighthouse Beach being the most popular.

The first time we saw the distinctive black sands and crystal-clear waters, we were struck by how perfectly they complement the lush palm groves that fringe the shoreline. The beach attracts a diverse crowd of tourists, all drawn by the promise of sunbathing, swimming, and indulging in various beachside activities. The best part is that the unique arch like shape of Kovalam Beach leaves it with a large stretch of shallow sea, making it one of the best kid-friendly beaches in South India.

One of my favorite aspects of Kovalam Beach is the vibrant atmosphere. The beach is lined with numerous shacks and Kovalam restaurants that serve up some of the best seafood and local Kerala dishes I’ve ever tasted. WE found ouselves spending hours savoring the flavors while taking in the scenic views, letting the rhythm of the waves set the pace for a relaxed day.

For adventure seekers, Kovalam Beach is a playground. I couldn’t resist trying out some water sports—surfing, parasailing, and jet-skiing were all on offer. Each activity added its own thrill, making the beach a perfect mix of relaxation and excitement.

As the day draws to a close, the beach transforms into something magical. The sunsets here are breathtaking, with the sky turning brilliant shades of orange and pink. It’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left the sands of Kovalam.

Kovalam Lighthouse

Another must-do for families in Kovalam is visiting the Kovalam Lighthouse. Located at the southern end of Lighthouse Beach, this iconic red-and-white striped structure has been guiding sailors since 1972. I decided to make the climb up its 142 steps, which, while a bit strenuous, is absolutely worth it.

The panoramic view from the top is nothing short of spectacular—you can see the Arabian Sea stretching out endlessly, the golden coastline, and the lush landscape surrounding Kovalam. Watching the sunset from the lighthouse’s observation platform was one of the highlights of my trip.

The area around the lighthouse, with its lush greenery and rocky outcrops, is perfect for a peaceful stroll or some photography. I found the visit to be both a historical and visual treat, making it a must-see when in Kovalam.

The lighthouse is open from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and again from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, though it’s closed on Mondays. There’s a small entry fee of Rs. 20 for adults and Rs. 10 for children, with an additional Rs. 10 if you’re bringing a camera.

Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium

When I visited Kovalam, one of the unexpected delights was the Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium, also known as the Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium. Tucked away near Kovalam, this small but captivating aquarium offers a window into the rich marine biodiversity of the region.

Established in 1997 and managed by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, the aquarium might be modest in size, but it’s packed with a variety of marine species, from colorful tropical fish to vibrant corals and other fascinating sea creatures. needless to say, Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium was my 4-year-old’s favourite spot in Kovalam.

One of the most intriguing experiences at the aquarium was witnessing the “Image Pearl Production” technique. Watching pearls being created from mussels was a rare and educational treat, something I hadn’t seen before. The aquarium serves as an important hub for marine research and conservation, which made the visit feel even more meaningful.

We found it to be a perfect spot for families, especially those with children curious about the underwater world. Despite its small size, the Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium offers a rich and engaging experience that left me with a deeper appreciation for marine life and the efforts to protect it.

Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium is open on all days of the week from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. The entry fee for adults is Rs. 20 while for children, it is Rs. 10. There is an additional photography fee of Rs. 10.

Grove Beach

Another serene spot I discovered in Kovalam was Grove Beach. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from the more crowded tourist areas, this hidden gem is the place to be. Surrounded by lush groves of coconut palms, Grove Beach has an unspoiled, natural charm that instantly made me feel at ease. Unlike the bustling scenes at some of Kovalam’s more famous beaches, Grove Beach is a haven of tranquility, perfect for meditation, yoga, or simply unwinding with a good book.

The ambiance here is incredibly soothing, with the gentle sound of waves and the greenery around adding to the peaceful vibe. Bird watchers, too, will find Grove Beach a delightful spot, as the area attracts a variety of bird species. With fewer commercial establishments, the beach remains pristine and untouched, offering a refreshing change from the usual tourist hustle and bustle. It’s a spot that rejuvenates both the mind and body, making it one of my favorite places in Kovalam.

Samudra Beach Park

I found Samudra Beach Park to be an absolute gem for relaxation and leisure. This beautifully landscaped park, which is an extension of the serene Samudra Beach, offers a peaceful retreat with its well-maintained pathways, lush green lawns, and shaded areas under swaying coconut palms.

The moment I stepped into the park, I felt an overwhelming sense of calm, thanks to the stunning views of the Arabian Sea and the dramatic rocky outcrops that define this part of the Kovalam coastline.

Samudra Beach Park quickly became one of my favorite spots for unwinding. I noticed that families often visit the park for picnics, with plenty of space for children to run around while adults relax and enjoy the serene environment. We spent most of our afternoon here, just taking in the peaceful atmosphere, and it was a perfect escape from the busier tourist areas.

Kerala Art and Craft Village

Another highlight of my trip was the Kerala Art and Craft Village, a vibrant cultural hub near Kovalam. Spanning 9 acres, this village is dedicated to preserving and promoting Kerala’s rich heritage of traditional arts and crafts.

As soon as I entered, I was immersed in the artistic traditions of the region. Artisans from various parts of Kerala demonstrated their skills in workshops and studios, showcasing crafts such as pottery, weaving, wood carving, and mural painting.

What made the experience even more special was the opportunity to interact with the artisans. You can spent time learning about their techniques and even tried a hand at creating some crafts yourselfself. The village also has a well-curated museum displaying exquisite artifacts that provide deeper insights into Kerala’s cultural history.

Before leaving, I made sure to visit the craft emporium. Here you can purchase some authentic handcrafted items directly from the artisans, knowing that your purchase was supporting local craftsmanship.

For anyone interested in learning the local crafts, the village also offers short-term workshops in its art studios and weaving village. I found to be an excellent way to connect more deeply with the culture.

Kerala Art and Craft village is open from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm on all days except Mondays. On Monday the center is closed.

The village charges an entry fee of Rs. 100 for Indian adults and Rs. 200 for a foreign national. There is an additional charge of Rs. 250 if you are carrying professional camera for photography. Mobile photography is free, though. There is also a nominal parking fee of Rs. 30 for four wheelers.

Vellayini Lake

One of my favorite places to visit near Kovalam is Vellayani Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Trivandrum district. This serene and picturesque destination is a true escape into nature. The lake is surrounded by lush greenery, and the sight of its abundant lotus bloom is simply breathtaking. I spent hours just soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, which is a perfect contrast to the more bustling areas of Kovalam.

Vellayani Lake is also a haven for birdwatchers, attracting several migratory birds. During my visit, I was delighted to spot a variety of bird species. If you are visiting with family like us, I would suggest taking a leisurely boat ride on Vellayani Lake. If you happen to visit during the Onam season, from late August to mid-September, you can witness the Ayyankali Annual Boat Race, which is held on this lake.

Azhimala Shiva Temple

Another must-visit spot during my time in Kovalam was the Azhimala Shiva Temple. Perched atop a cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea, this temple is not just a spiritual haven but also a place of immense natural beauty. The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located in the village of Azhimala, just a short drive south from Kovalam. The name ‘Azhimala,’ derived from ‘Aazhi’ meaning ‘sea’ and ‘Mala’ meaning ‘hill,’ perfectly reflects its stunning coastal setting.

What truly sets this temple apart is the magnificent 58-feet tall Shiva statue, the largest in Kerala. Here I learned that this sculpture was created by a local artist. The statue, depicting Lord Shiva in the form of Gangadhareshwara, is awe-inspiring and has become a popular attraction for both devotees and tourists.

I was particularly struck by the majestic presence of the statue against the backdrop of the sea, and the sunsets viewed from the temple premises are nothing short of magical. Watching the sun dip into the ocean from here was one of the most memorable moments of my trip, and it’s an experience I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Kovalam.

Azhimala Cliff Beach

Azhimala Cliff Beach is one of those hidden treasures that you almost want to keep to yourself, tucked away near the Azhimala Shiva Temple. When I first visited, I was struck by the unique combination of rugged cliffs and pristine sandy shores. It’s a place where nature feels both powerful and serene! The dramatic landscape, where towering cliffs meet the deep blue waters of the Arabian Sea, creates a breathtaking setting that feels worlds away from the busier beaches of Kovalam.

Unlike the more commercialized Varkala Cliff Beach, Azhimala Beach remains untouched by the rush of tourism. I loved the sense of solitude here, where I could take leisurely walks along the shore, explore the tide pools nestled between the rocks, and just sit and soak in the peaceful ambiance.

The cliffs offer stunning vantage points, especially during sunrise and sunset when the sky is painted in warm hues, making it a photographer’s paradise. If you’re looking to experience the raw, unspoiled beauty of Kerala’s coastline, Azhimala Cliff Beach is a must-visit.

Rock Cut Cave Shiva Temple

Not far from Azhimala, I discovered the Rock Cut Cave Shiva Temple, a fascinating historical site that feels like a journey back in time. This temple is carved directly into a large boulder.
