Best Time to Visit Coorg for a Budget Trip

Coorg is a year-round destination, thanks to its pleasant climate, but the best time to visit for a budget trip is the shoulder seasons, February–March or October–early November to enjoy good weather and lower prices.

We visited Coorg in May, which is the peak season due to summer vacations in school but we managed to get a good homestay for under Rs. 1500 per night as they were weekdays. Honestly, your stay is the only expense influenced by the travel season; the rest remains the same throughout.

How to Reach Coorg on a Budget

The most common way to reach Coorg is by road, especially from Bangalore, which is about 250 km away and takes around 5–6 hours by car. The scenic drive through the Western Ghats makes for a pleasant road trip. Buses operated by KSRTC and private companies also run regularly from Bangalore, Mysore, and Mangalore to towns like Madikeri and Kushalnagar in Coorg. KSRTC buses are the best budget travel option to reach Coorg.

I would avoid the private buses if traveling during the day. Private buses charge slightly more and take you through longer routes and thus adding substantially to your travel time.

If you are visiting Coorg from Kerala, the best option would be to reach Kannur and board a KSRTC bus to Virajpet and then from there, a private bus to Madikeri. We made the biggest mistake of boarding a private bus to Madikeri from Kannur, and the bus took 5 hours to reach the destination.

How Many Days Are Enough for Coorg?

The ideal duration for a Coorg trip depends on your travel style and how much you want to explore, but 2 to 4 days is generally sufficient for most visitors. If you’re planning a weekend getaway, a 2-day trip can cover the major attractions around Madikeri, such as Abbey Falls, Raja’s Seat, Madikeri Fort, and a visit to a local coffee estate. This is perfect for those looking to relax and enjoy nature without packing too much into the itinerary.

However, if you want a more relaxed pace or to explore beyond the main town, a 3 to 4-day itinerary allows you to include places like Dubare Elephant Camp, Nisargadhama, and Bylakuppe’s Tibetan Monastery. It also gives you time for activities like coffee plantation walks, short treks, or even river rafting (seasonal). For travelers who enjoy offbeat experiences or staying in remote homestays surrounded by nature, even 5 days won’t feel like too much.

Ultimately, 2–3 days work for a quick tour, but 4+ days let you truly unwind and soak in the Coorg experience.

We did a 4 Day Coorg trip, spending two mornings and one night in Madikeri, and two nights and two mornings in Kushalnagar. It was sufficient to cover almost 20 top attractions in Coorg.

Top Places to Visit in Coorg with Pro Budget Tips

Abbey Falls

Located just 8 km from Madikeri, Abbey Falls is a stunning waterfall nestled within coffee and spice plantations. The sound of water crashing down from 70 feet and the hanging bridge viewpoint make it one of Coorg’s most iconic photo spots.

Pro Tip: Abbey Falls opens at 9:00 am. Try to get there early in the morning to avoid crowd and some relaxed time watching the cascading falls

Raja’s Seat

This beautifully maintained garden offers panoramic views of the Western Ghats, especially breathtaking at sunrise and sunset. Once used by Kodava kings for relaxation, it now features musical fountains and is a favorite among locals and tourists alike.

Pro Tip: The park is open from 7:00 am. Visit at this time and you can enjoy the view of the valley under a layer of haze and with fewer crowds. Or visit Rajas Seat after 5:00 pm to witness the sunset, although the park can get really crowded around this time.

Dubare Elephant Camp

Situated on the banks of the River Cauvery, this elephant training camp lets you interact with elephants—feeding, bathing, and learning about their behavior. It’s a unique and educational experience, especially fun for families and kids.

Pro Tip: Wear strap-on sandals while visiting Dubare as you need to cross the river at a shallow point to get to the other side. If you are wearing socks and shoes, carry a shoe bag so that you can put them in safely in the bag and carry it to the other side without getting it damaged.

Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple), Bylakuppe

This vibrant Tibetan Buddhist monastery is known for its massive golden Buddha statues, colorful murals, and peaceful atmosphere. It provides a cultural contrast to Coorg’s nature-based attractions and is one of the largest Tibetan settlements in South India.

Pro Tip: If you are hiring an auto or taxi for local sightseeing, they are most likely to skip this out of your itinerary. You will need to insist upon visiting this attraction. Trust me, you are not going to see a tomb of a Hindu king like this anywhere else.

Coorg is famous for its aromatic coffee estates. Take guided tours through lush plantations to see the coffee-making process, from bean to cup, and enjoy tasting freshly brewed local coffee amidst serene surroundings.

Pro Tip: Avoid shopping at the plantations as we found no date of manufacturing for the coffee powder packs and also, they have mentioned “added nature identical flavouring agents.” I don’t see why you need embellishments in a coffee product at the site of its production.

Trekking Adventures

Explore scenic trekking trails like Tadiandamol, Coorg’s highest peak, or the Brahmagiri Hills. These treks offer stunning views, rich biodiversity, and a refreshing escape into nature’s lap.

Pro Tip: I would recommend these only if you are visiting for 3 or more days, or if this is your second visit to Coorg. Otherwise, you will miss the chance of exploring the local attractions in the town.

Waterfall Visits

Don’t miss Coorg’s beautiful waterfalls such as Abbey Falls, Kote Abbey Falls, Iruppu Falls, and Chelavara Falls. Each offers a unique experience—whether it’s the thunderous roar of water, tranquil picnic spots, or lush greenery.

Pro Tip: If you are not planning to trek, I would recommend visiting Abbey Waterfalls and Kote Abbey Falls alone for your trip. These are the closest to the towns and requires only a short walk to reach to falls. At Kote Abbey Falls, you can even get in the stream.

Explore Dams and Reservoirs

Visit dams like Harangi and Chiklihole to enjoy peaceful boat rides and picturesque views. These spots are perfect for picnics and experiencing Coorg’s tranquil water landscapes.

Pro Tip: Visit Chiklihole Dam only in the monsoon, post-monsoon seasons. At all other times, there is hardly any overflowing water over the semi-circular crest creating a beautiful spectacle.

New Freemans Family Restaurant & Bakers
Offering a mix of North Indian, South Indian, local Koduva cuisine, and baked treats, New Freemans is a versatile stop for families. With reasonable prices and a wide menu, it caters well to both locals and tourists.

Food is an area where we ended up splurging a little more than we would have liked to. On the day of our arrival, we chose to have our lunch in a nice, good-looking restaurant that had an expensive menu. While the food was great, we were not happy with the bill!
