Having wondered for long on the hype around this laid-back town, I embarked on a family trip to Varkala and was completely smitten by it. Here are my top picks of the best places to visit in Varkala with family to experience the beauty and charm of Kerala’s coastline.

Varkala Cliff and Beach is one of Kerala’s most stunning coastal attractions, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, geological significance, and vibrant tourist activity.

The Varkala cliffs, composed of red laterite, rise majestically from the coastline, creating a striking contrast against the blue waters of the Arabian Sea. This dramatic cliff face is not just a visual treat but also a geological wonder, as it’s one of the few places on the western coast of India where cliffs meet the sea directly.

The beach below, known as Papanasam Beach, holds religious significance for Hindus who believe that a dip in its waters will wash away sins.

Strolling along the cliff-top promenade is an experience in itself. It’s lined with bustling cafes, restaurants, and shops, making it a lively hub for tourists. I loved taking leisurely walks along this path, soaking in the panoramic views of the sea and catching unforgettable sunsets. The beach is perfect for a range of activities—whether you’re into swimming, surfing, sunbathing, or beach sports, there’s something for everyone. Plus, with lifeguards on duty, it feels safe and welcoming.

For those seeking a bit of wellness, the cliffs are also home to several yoga and Ayurvedic centers. It’s a fantastic place to rejuvenate your mind and body while being surrounded by the serene natural beauty. Varkala Cliff and Beach easily stand out as the top tourist attraction in Varkala, combining everything I love about coastal travel into one perfect destination.

Important Update: There used to be a floating bridge on Varkala Beach. During an event of high tide in March 2024, the bridge collapsed, injuring several people. Since then, the floating bridge has been inoperative.

Jatayu Earth’s Center

Jatayu Earth’s Center, also known as Jatayu Nature Park, is an extraordinary and unique attraction located around 30 kilometers from Varkala.

This center is home to the world’s largest bird sculpture, a monumental depiction of Jatayu, the mythical eagle from the Indian epic Ramayana.

The sculpture, standing at 200 feet long, 150 feet wide, and 70 feet tall, is perched on a hill and symbolizes the heroism and valor of Jatayu who, according to legend, fought valiantly to protect Sita from the demon king Ravana.

We reached the top of the hill via a cable car with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Once at the top, you can explore a state-of-the-art museum and a digital audio-visual room that narrates the tale of Jatayu and the broader context of the Ramayana.

The center also features an adventure zone with activities such as rock climbing, rappelling, and zip-lining, making it a perfect blend of mythology, adventure, and eco-tourism for family travel in Varkala.

Jatayu Earth’s Centre is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 PM. The entry fee for the park is Rs. 250. There is an additional charge of Rs. 250 for the cable car ride. While you can choose to walk, I wouldn’t recommend it as it 1 kilometer plus over 800 steps on foot to reach the sculpture. You are expected to PAY IN CASH ONLY as they do not accept card or UPI payment as of yet (2025). I was not very impressed with the cash-only payment method at Jatayu’s Earth Centre.

Kappil Beach

Kappil Beach, situated about 6 kilometers north of Varkala, is a scenic and tranquil destination renowned for its unique geographical features and serene ambiance.

This pristine beach is distinguished by its golden sands and the tranquil backwaters that run parallel to the sea, creating a picturesque and diverse landscape.

The presence of the backwaters offers you a dual experience of the calm inland waters and the dynamic waves of the Arabian Sea, making it a versatile spot for various activities.

The serene backwaters are ideal for boating and kayaking for families, offering a tranquil escape amidst lush greenery and swaying coconut palms.

Sri Janardanaswamy Temple

Sri Janardanaswamy Temple is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Janardanaswamy.

Dedicated to Vishnu as Janardanaswamy, or Varkaleswara, the lord of Varkala, this ancient temple is believed to be thousands of years old. The temple’s origins are steeped in legend, with tales of divine intervention involving Narada and Vishnu, establishing Varkala as a sacred site.

One story tells of Brahma prostrating before Vishnu at this spot, leading to the temple’s construction for devotees to seek blessings and redemption.

Architecturally, the temple is a stunning example of Kerala art and design. Perched on a tableland overlooking the sea, it features a long flight of stairs leading to the entrance, flanked by Hanuman and Garuda statues.

Inside, the main shrine houses Janardana with Sridevi and Bhudevi, under a circular sanctum sanctorum with a conical copper dome. The square mandapa, adorned with wooden carvings of the Navagrahas, and the copper-plated roof, reflect meticulous craftsmanship.

The temple’s spiritual significance is profound, with beliefs that prayers here and a bath at nearby Papanasam Beach can cleanse sins. Known as the “Kashi of the South” or “Gaya of the South,” it attracts numerous pilgrims year-round. The temple also features a medicinal pond and shrines to Shiva and Sasta.

Janardhanaswamy Temple is open for darshan from 5:00 am to 12:00 pm in the morning and then again from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the evening. As a tourist, you can visit the temple any time in between.

Shivagiri Mutt

Sivagiri Mutt, situated about 3 kilometers from Varkala, is a prominent spiritual center and pilgrimage site founded by the revered social reformer Sree Narayana Guru.

Established in 1904, the Mutt serves as the headquarters of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham, an organization dedicated to promoting the Guru’s teachings on social equality, education, and spiritual enlightenment.

Sree Narayana Guru, a major figure in Kerala’s social reform movement, advocated for the eradication of caste discrimination and emphasized the unity of all religions.

The Mutt is set on the scenic Sivagiri hill, offering a peaceful and contemplative environment for visitors. It houses the samadhi (final resting place) of Sree Narayana Guru, which is a focal point of pilgrimage.

In addition to its religious significance, Sivagiri Mutt plays a vital role in the socio-cultural landscape of Kerala. It promotes education through numerous schools and colleges and runs various social welfare programs.

As a Keralite, the Sivagiri Mutt was an important historical site to reflect on the social reform of Kerala and we spend some time here as family to try explaining it to our kid.

Shivgiri Mutt is open for darshan from 5:00 am to 12:00 pm in the morning and then from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the evening.

Kaveri Elephant Park

If you are visiting Varkala with kids, a visit to Kaveri Elephant Park is a must on your travel itinerary.

The park was established with the aim of the conservation and care of elephants, providing a safe and nurturing environment for them. However, over time it expanded into an animal and aviary park where you can interact the animal world at close quarters. 

When we visited Kaveri Elephant Park, we were offered a guided tour of the park at no additional charges. As we entered, we were first met by a female elephant named Ganga, who was very friendly and trained well to be around people.

We clicked photographs hugging the elephant. You can see here how comfortable my 4-year-old feels around the jumbo. You can also feed her banana. For an additional charge, you can take get an elephant ride around the park.

Once we got to the aviary park, the excitement heightened. We petted the emus and fed Koko the ostrich. Then we moved on to exotic poultries and farm animals. We could also pet the iguanas!

There are several large male elephants in the park in a separate shed. These are trained to participate in temple festivals; however, you cannot interact with them as closely as you do with the she-elephants. You can watch them as the Mahout feeds and tends to them.

Kaveri Elephant Park is open from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm on weekdays and till 7:00 pm on weekend. The entry fee for the park is Rs. 100 for an adult and Rs. 50 for a child under 12 years.

Anjengo Fort

Anjengo Fort, also known as Anchuthengu Fort, is a historical monument located about 12 kilometers from Varkala. Built by the British East India Company in the late 17th century, the fort served as a strategic trading post and a stronghold in their early colonial endeavors in India.

The fort’s location was ideal for monitoring maritime activities and protecting trade routes, making it a significant military and commercial site during its time. The architecture of Anjengo Fort reflects the colonial style, with thick laterite walls, bastions, and a spacious courtyard.

Today, Anjengo Fort stands as a testament to the region’s colonial past and offers a glimpse into the historical events that shaped the area. You can explore the well-preserved remnants of the fort, including the ancient cemetery where many British soldiers and officials were laid to rest.

The fort’s strategic location also provides stunning views of the Arabian Sea, making it a picturesque spot for photography and leisurely walks.

We were not very thrilled about visiting Anjengo Fort as we found it to be ill-maintained and abandoned. On top of that, we couldn’t find any restaurant or cafe near the fort. We had got there in the afternoon, and really hungry. Somehow the whole experience was slightly disappointing. I would suggest you plan to visit the fort and the lighthouse after having a meal.

Anjengo Fort is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. There is no entry fee to visit the fort.

Varkala Lighthouse

Varkala Lighthouse is a prominent landmark located near Varkala Beach, offering panoramic views of the surrounding coastal landscape.

Erected in 1979, the lighthouse stands at a height of about 40 meters (131 feet) and serves as a navigational aid for ships sailing along the Arabian Sea. The structure’s striking white and red stripes make it easily recognizable and a popular spot for tourists seeking stunning vistas and a touch of adventure.

You can climb to the top of Varkala Lighthouse via a spiral staircase, which can be quite a workout but is well worth the effort. Once at the top, you are rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the coastline, the Arabian Sea, and the lush green hinterlands.

Varkala Lighthouse is open from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm on all days of the week, except Mondays. There is a nominal entry fee of Rs. 10 t visit the lighthouse.

Varkala Aquarium

Varkala Aquarium, strategically located between Black Beach and Odayam Beach, is an engaging and educational attraction that adds a unique dimension to Varkala’s coastal allure.

The aquarium houses a diverse collection of marine life, offering a window into the vibrant underwater ecosystems of the Arabian Sea. You can marvel at a variety of tropical fish, seahorses, eels, and other exotic marine creatures, all housed in well-maintained tanks that replicate their natural habitats.

Varkala Aquarium is open from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm. The aquarium charges a nominal entry fee of Rs. 30 per person.

Thiruvambadi Beach

Thiruvambadi Beach, often referred to as the Black Sand Beach, is another captivating coastal spot located near Varkala.

This beach is distinct for its black sand, which creates a striking contrast against the blue waters of the Arabian Sea and sets it apart from the typical golden beaches. The black sand, a result of the high mineral content, gives the beach a unique and exotic appeal. Surrounded by rocky cliffs and lush greenery, Thiruvambadi Beach offers a tranquil and scenic escape from the more crowded tourist spots.

At Thiruvambadi Beach you can enjoy a serene and laid-back atmosphere, perfect for relaxing, meditating, or practicing yoga. The beach is less frequented, providing a peaceful environment for those looking to unwind.

Its rocky outcrops and small coves make it a fascinating place to explore, especially for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers. The gentle waves are suitable for swimming, and the beach’s seclusion makes it an ideal spot for picnics and quiet reflection.
