2 Day Coorg Itinerary: How to Ace a Weekend Family Trip

Planning a 2-day Coorg trip? Here is everything you need to know

Coorg is one of those places that instantly puts you at ease—rolling green hills, the aroma of coffee in the air, and the perfect blend of nature, culture, and comfort. I had the chance to explore Coorg over a longer family trip on a budget, and it gave me enough time to discover both the popular spots and a few local gems.

Based on that experience, I’ve put together this 2-day Coorg itinerary for anyone planning a quick getaway. It covers the best of Madikeri on one day—from waterfalls to forts and sunset views—and the highlights of Kushalnagar on the other day, including the serene Namdroling Monastery and elephant encounters.

If you’re short on time but want a well-rounded Coorg experience, this plan will help you make the most of two days without feeling rushed.

Note: I have designed the itinerary in such a way that you could swap the itineraries for the two days depending on whether you start at Kushalnagar or Madikeri.

🍳 After 7:00 AM: Breakfast in Madikeri Town

It is best to have your breakfast in Madikeri town before beginning the trip, as Abbey Waterfalls, the tourist spot that opens first in Coorg, is away from the town, and you will find only small stalls near the waterfalls.

Here are some amazing South Indian vegetarian breakfast spots in Coorg that are open from 7:00 am.

  • Udupi Garden
  • Paakashala Madikeri
  • Ambika Upahar Udupi Vegetarian Restaurant

After breakfast, head to Abbey Waterfalls, located about twenty minutes from the town.

🌊 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Abbey Falls

Start your day with the cool mist and thundering waters of Abbey Falls, just a short drive of 8 kilometers from Madikeri town. Nestled within coffee and spice plantations, the short forest trail to the viewpoint is a refreshing way to begin your Coorg adventure.

Tucked amidst lush coffee plantations, Abbey Falls is one of Coorg’s most popular natural attractions. The cascading waters plunge from a height into a rocky pool, creating a dramatic and refreshing scene, especially during or just after the monsoon. A short forest trail leads to a viewpoint bridge, perfect for photos and soaking in the misty beauty.

Tip: Visit early to avoid crowds and enjoy the falls at their most peaceful.

🏰 10:30 AM – 11:15 AM: Madikeri Fort & Museum

Your next stop is the Madikeri Fort and Museum, which offers a glimpse into the region’s colonial and royal history.

Originally built in the 17th century and later renovated by Tipu Sultan and the British, Madikeri Fort is a historical landmark with colonial architecture and a commanding view of the town. The fort showcases a mix of architectural styles reflecting its varied rulers—Islamic arches, European-style structures, and traditional South Indian features.

Inside the fort complex is a two-story palace, which now houses a museum maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The museum displays artifacts from Coorg’s past, including weaponry, coins, and portraits of notable personalities, offering a deep dive into Kodava culture and colonial history. The fort walls and bastions still evoke its strategic military significance during regional conflicts.

🎖️ 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM: General Thimmaiah Memorial Museum

Located less than a kilometer from Madikeri Fort & Museum, General Thimmaiah Memorial Museum is a must on your 2-day Coorg itinerary.

Dedicated to one of India’s most respected military leaders, General Kodandera Subayya Thimmaiah, this museum honors his legacy as the former Chief of the Indian Army and a distinguished World War II veteran.

Sunnyside is the ancestral home of General Thimmaiyah, now a must visit attraction in Coorg

Located in his ancestral home in Madikeri, the museum features personal memorabilia, military uniforms, photographs, and documents that trace his journey from a young cadet to a national hero. It offers valuable insights into India’s military history and the contributions of the Kodava community to the armed forces. The architecture of the house is modest and traditional, typical of Kodava homes, adding a personal and cultural touch to the historical narrative.

🍛 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Lunch

Refuel with a delicious lunch after the two museum visits. Luckily, General Thimmaiah Memorial Museum is located close to some of best Coorg restaurants for a Kodava lunch. Here are my recommendations:

🛕 2:00 PM – 2:30 PM: Omkareshwara Temple

Post-lunch, visit the serene Omkareshwara Temple, famous for its architecture and history.

Built in 1820 by King Lingarajendra II, the Omkareshwara Temple is an intriguing blend of Islamic and Gothic architectural styles, uncommon for a Hindu shrine. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it features a central dome and four minaret-like turrets, reflecting Indo-Islamic influences.

The temple’s design is said to be inspired by a mosque, with a water tank in front housing freshwater fish, adding to the serene atmosphere. The temple was constructed as an act of penance by the king and remains an important spiritual site for locals. Its unique fusion architecture makes it a standout attraction in Madikeri.

☕ 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM: Coffee Plantation Experience

Visit a nearby coffee estate like Mercara Gold Estate, or Mountain View Coffee Plantation. Enjoy a guided walk through the plantation, learn how coffee is grown and processed, and sip freshly brewed local coffee.

Optional: Many estates also sell their own coffee blends and spice mixes—great souvenirs to take home.

Wrap up your day at Raja’s Seat, a beautifully maintained viewpoint garden with panoramic views of Coorg’s hills and valleys. The golden hour here is simply magical, and if you stay a little longer, you can also catch the musical fountain show (usually in the evening around 6:30 PM).

Raja’s Seat, meaning “Seat of the Kings,” is a scenic viewpoint in Madikeri where Kodagu’s kings once spent their leisure hours admiring the sunset and the valley below. Perched on a hill, it offers panoramic views of lush green valleys, rolling hills, and seasonal flowerbeds.

The structure is a simple pavilion made of brick and mortar with four pillars and arches, set within a beautifully maintained garden. Though not grand in architecture, its historical significance as a royal retreat and its spectacular natural setting make it one of the most popular tourist spots in Coorg.
